Frequently Asked Questions - Portrait Sessions

Every photographer does things differently from the next, so even if you have had photos taken before, some of my practices may not be what you are used to. If you have questions that are not listed below or still have more questions about anything here, please use the contact button at the bottom of the page and ask!

How many photos are included with my session and can I choose or pay for more?

My philosophy on delivering final, edited images is that less is more.  I believe that it's better to deliver fewer magical moments of you and your family, or perfect expressions for headshots, than lots of average ones!  Having said that, my goal is to capture as many of those ideal moments as possible. Due to the nature of photography however, I can not always guarantee the final number of images.  My goal is to deliver up to 15 edited images for a 1-hour session, and up to 35 for a 2-hour session.  If I get more, I will share them with you at no additional cost!

How do you deliver my photos?

Your photos will be delivered through a beautiful online gallery that includes a download PIN. To see an example of gallery, click here.

When will I receive my photos?

Photos will be edited and sent to you within 2 weeks from your session, but in most cases you should receive them within a week.

Are the digital files mine?

Yes - you can do whatever you like with the digital files - email them, text them to all of your friends, share them on social media - the only thing you cannot do with your photos is sell them (copyright and usage rights are all explained in full in my contract, so I won’t bore you with it here).

Can I print my photos myself?

While I offer high quality printing options directly through your gallery (with just a few clicks), a print release for your session is available upon request. The price for a print release is $50.

What is a print release?

A print release is a document that states that I give you permission to print your photos at the lab of your choice. Though some labs will not ask you for a print release to print photographs that look like they were taken by a professional, they should. If they do require a release, you will need to provide one before printing your photos.

What should I wear to my session?

First and foremost, you should wear something that makes you feel comfortable and confident. In general, solid colors tend to photograph better than patterned material, and especially for guys, long pants are preferable to shorts. Without knowing what you have in your closet, these are the best suggestions I can give you - again, always go with what you feel comfortable in over any of the other guidelines listed above - feeling great will also make you look great!

It is sometimes challenging to make my child smile for photos, and I also worry that a full hour session will be too long for him/her. What do you suggest?

Though I understand that most people want at least one or two photos where everyone is looking at the camera and smiling their best smile, some kids are not as quick to warm up to a new situation as others. It is important to me that you know that I try to make my sessions fun, and part of that is that we all agree not to apply too much pressure on anyone (children or adults) to “perform” for the camera if they do not feel comfortable doing so (with the option to encourage a performance for anyone who DOES enjoy it). An hour session may seem like a long time for younger children to stay focused, but if we end up spending 45 minutes of your session trying to create a relaxing, fun experience and smiles and laughs start coming through in the last 10 or 15 minutes, then that’s a win, right?! Many of my sessions have included taking breaks to explore the area (which may be completely new and exciting to you and/or your children), talking with them while my camera is not in front of my face to get them more comfortable, or doing some moving around to get out some energy. I know it’s not always as easy as “1-2-3 look at the camera, big smile, click and go!” I believe having experience working with children puts me at an advantage here, and I am happy to talk with you about facilitating a positive experience for your entire family, regardless of age.
